Writing and Research Skills Assessment

Before you begin, please read the following two articles:

Writing For Readers Who Scan

You may also want to review the e-tern orientation in order to get a better idea about how HelpGrams are designed to be used.

Now complete the following three exercises, keeping in mind what you’ve just read about Web writing.

1. Research a topic on the Internet

Choose a topic from the list below that you would most like to research/write about:

• Planning Your Vacation Budget
• Eating Out: Factors to Consider
• Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Symptoms and Treatments
• The Importance of Prenatal Vitamins and Care
• Changing Your Major: Factors to Consider
• Your 401(k) Plan: Understanding the Basics
• Smart Ways to Save Money for College

Now go online and search for three (3) websites and/or online articles that pertain to your topic of choice (check the websites for credibility and relevant information). Once you’ve made your final selections, copy and paste the URLs in the space provided. Beside each URL, write a brief rationale (10-20 words) as to why you chose that article/website.

• Rationale

URL #3

2. Write an Expert Statement

An Expert Statement is a brief introductory paragraph. It must be no more than 100 words, and it must:

a) Identify the problem.
b) Validate the reader’s concern for the issue.
c) Motivate the reader to address the issue by identifying the risks if it is ignored.
d) Encourage the reader to act by showing the possible benefits.
Sample Expert Statement:

Hypertension is a fancy term for high blood pressure, meaning the tension in your blood vessels is too high. Many of us don’t like to think about it, but you should know that hypertension is a silent killer. There are no symptoms until the pressure is already too high and it begins to damage your vital organs, which can lead to strokes, heart attacks, kidney failure and other life-threatening conditions. Controlling your blood pressure can add years to your life, and that’s important to you and your loved ones, including the person who sent you this helpgram.

Now write your own Expert Statement for the topic you’ve chosen and researched.

3. Write a list of Data Points:

Re-read your three chosen articles/sites again to gather more information about your topic. Now write at least four (4) “data points” that you feel are the most relevant and important points of information pertaining to your topic. Data points can come in the form of a top-10 list, a questions-to-ask-yourself list, a mnemonic acronym, a list of solution suggestions, or just a list of things the reader should be aware of. Your data points must be brief, 1-25 words each...remember the Web writing rules! Here is a list of sample data points related to the topic of Hypertension:

Factors That Prevent Hypertension:

· Reducing your weight
· Eating a low sodium diet
· Minimizing or eliminating your alcohol and/or nicotine intake
· Exercising regularly
· Controlling your cholesterol level
· Managing your diabetes (if you have it)

Thank you for taking the time to complete the application and research and writing skills assessment. If you have any questions/concerns about completing the application and exercises (or about anything else), please e-mail me and I’ll respond promptly.

I look forward to reading your work.
